How come Europeans say that Audis are the most reliable cars, but Americans say they are not?

Americans are still afraid of their Audis going into reverse like the 1988 Audi 5000. Americans also equate Audis with overpriced VWs and cannot discern the difference between luxury performance and cheap performance.
