My husband just got in the car and left while we were fighting. Will he most likely come back?

This afternoon my husband and I got into the worst fight we have ever had. No physical violence. Just extreme anger on both our parts. I gave up nicotine 2 days ago and feel that my emotional "rawness" has seriously inflamed the situation. Anyway, at the end of it he punched the door with his fist REALLY HARD and yelled "I'm done". He grabbed the keys and left. It's been almost 2 hours now. We have been together for 3 years and this has never happened. We've argued but he's never just left like this. For the first hour I did nothing but rock on the bed, cry and beg him to come back out loud. Then suddenly I stopped crying and went out front to water the plants. I found myself in a rather awkward conversation with my neighbor about gardens. It's so surreal...I'm guessing he'll be back when he calms down. His cell phone is broken so I can't call him. Besides, he elft so he should call me.
